Caroline Reynolds — Collected Poems and Selected Dramatic Reviews

Caroline Reynolds entered Los Angeles print culture as a teenage poet and, before she was twenty-five, had become a regular dramatic critic for The Graphic. A full-page 1911 profile praised her imagery, rhythmic facility, and emotional range; the magazine repeatedly placed her poems on its illustrated covers. Her strongest work turns familiar lyric subjects into sharply framed scenes: a buoy sounding offshore, Pan’s pipes in wet greenwood, winter flowers under a California sky, the social enclosure of a restaurant, and the pull of roads leading beyond the city. Beginning in 1912, Reynolds also reviewed the Los Angeles stage, writing about Sarah Bernhardt, Peter Pan, The Blue Bird, Magda, Madame Butterfly, vaudeville, stock companies, and new American problem plays. This edition gathers the fifty verified poems presently in the project corpus and a representative selection of her signed dramatic criticism, together with archival pages that show the magazine world in which her career unfolded.
