Anthologies and Documents
Anthologies and Documents is the books and documentary branch of Extremes and Moderations, a historical archive of Los Angeles and Southern California poetry published through The Text/Tech Papers. It recovers regional anthologies, literary collections, civic and cultural histories, bibliographical records, and research editions that are out of print, difficult to locate, or dispersed across larger sources.
The archive treats a literary culture as more than a sequence of individual authors. Anthologies, clubs, schools, presses, newspapers, institutions, editors, and historical compilations all help reveal how writing was selected, circulated, remembered, and sometimes forgotten.
ABOUT THE PROJECT
Anthologies and Documents reconstructs the shared settings in which Southern California literature became visible. Its materials range from nineteenth-century Pacific Coast collections and early Los Angeles club anthologies to bilingual historical recovery projects, mid-century poetry gatherings, cultural histories, and new editorial selections prepared for this archive.
These books often cross ordinary genre boundaries. A volume may combine poetry, prose, portraiture, criticism, correspondence, biography, documentary evidence, or visual material. The archive keeps those mixtures legible rather than forcing every item into a single literary category.
How the Archive Works
Every item has its own page with a concise introduction, contributor credits, publication details, a contents description, citation guidance, and a searchable reader’s PDF when rights permit.
The record distinguishes the historical source from the Text/Tech edition. A reset or selected-text edition is not presented as a facsimile, and a literary selection drawn from a larger historical work is identified as an anthology rather than as the complete original publication.
The archive will continue to expand as additional books, documentary sources, bibliographic evidence, and relationships among publications are located.

Collections
Collection pathways within the Catalogue gather editions that share a historical setting, institution, regional scope, or editorial project.

The Contributors directory connects authors, poets, editors, compilers, translators, artists, and organizations across editions.
Editorial Practice, Rights, and Citation
Editorial Method
Metadata, contributor credits, and contents are checked against the reader’s edition and, where available, the original scan or bibliographical record. Editorial changes are made for readability and search while preserving the scope and sequence of the historical source.
Rights and Open Access
Copyright remains with the respective authors, artists, editors, publishers, or successors. Each record states the current basis for access. Corrections, rights information, and removal requests may be sent to the editor.
Citation and Identifiers
Each item carries a stable Record ID and suggested citation. Citations should identify the original title, editor or compiler when relevant, original publication information, and the Text/Tech Anthologies and Documents edition.
ABOUT THE EDITOR
Brian Kim Stefans is a poet, critic, editor, and scholar working across contemporary poetry, digital literature, experimental writing, and the history of literary technologies. He edits The Text/Tech Papers and Extremes and Moderations.
The project grows out of long-standing interests in literary archives, neglected poetic traditions, small-press culture, electronic publication, and the ways digital tools can make difficult or inaccessible bodies of writing available to new readers.
