In The Clavilux, Madge Ohe brings the issue’s modernist pressure into focus. The poem compresses perception into short, image-bearing lines around “On a pivot of fire”; pause and white space become part of the measure, bringing ordinary experience as formally unsettled lyric material into the magazine’s field of subjects. Dana Burnet’s Lone Willow answers it from another angle: it uses rhetorical punctuation to disturb an otherwise measured line around “How beautiful the lone tree is”; exclamation and question become rhythmic events. The presence of a named form such as Sonnet makes the contrast especially legible: innovation occurs beside inherited measure, not after its disappearance. In this Los Angeles setting, modernism appears less as a manifesto than as a widening of permissible rhythm, image, and subject within a magazine still hospitable to rhyme.
