Journal Issue
Samarkand by Lucy H. Sturges marks the issue’s most conspicuous opening toward modernist practice. The poem organizes description through sentence-length lines around “In the Persian gardens of the Samarkand”; emphasis shifts through image, enjambment, and changes in syntactic pace, bringing ordinary experience as formally unsettled lyric material into the magazine’s field of subjects. Frances Wierman’s Machinery answers it from another angle: it builds by refrain and recurrence around “What are the thoughts of machines?”; repetition carries the poem’s turn rather than merely decorating it. Short lyrics, longer sequences, and unevenly unfolding free verse share the same contents list, making formal difference part of the issue’s reading rhythm. In this Los Angeles setting, modernism appears less as a manifesto than as a widening of permissible rhythm, image, and subject within a magazine still hospitable to rhyme.
