Pauline Barrington meets Ezra Pound’s Poems 1918–21 with admiration and resistance: she credits his attack on cliché and support for the Imagists while finding the new book brilliant, bewildering, and finally frustrated. Dorothea Moore’s appreciation of Marcel Proust extends the issue’s attention to difficult modern writing, while Jessica Nelson North’s “Wheels and Wings” compresses perception into short, image-bearing lines around “Four smoky windows in a smoky sky.” Together, the criticism and poetry catch Los Angeles literary culture arguing with modernism rather than merely accepting or rejecting it.
